I love you, but…

Riff (noun)

a short repeated phrase

via Riff

Is there a more over-used riff than “I love you”?

My boyfriend told me he loved me as he ended our relationship on Sunday.

We’re both in a place of struggling, of constantly trying to fix ourselves. I knew this. I knew it wouldn’t be easy. I thought he knew this. I was trying to make sure we didn’t forget ‘we’ in amongst all of the ‘me’. I thought he was, too.

But my boyfriend told me he loved me as he ended our relationship on Sunday. Well actually, it was more along the lines of ‘I love you, but…’

I love you, but there’s too much pressure.

I love you, but I’m overwhelmed.

I love you, but it’s too difficult.

He might as well have said

I love you, but not enough.
